Creating Multiple Volume Searchable Publications:
Building a database for Multiple Volume/CD publications is not technically different from single volume publications. Actual documents (html, htm, PDF, txt etc.) to be indexed should be organized into volumes where each volume should resemble a separate CD. Once the index database is built, the administrator should create a Virtual_CD that resembles the actual CD. The documentation provided with the application clearly elaborates on how to build a database and create a Virtual_CD. Once the Virtual_CD is created, the next step is to burn an installation CD and different volumes into different CD’s. Each CD-ROM should contain one volume. If the publication is intended for Windows and Unix users, then the CD-ROM labels could be different for each CD, but if the publication is intended for Macintosh users then all the CD-ROM labels should be identical, including the installation CD.
End User Installer:
This user-friendly executable program allows the end-users to install SearchDisc on their local drive. Once installed the user can launch the search server from the shortcut created during the installation (for Windows only) and begin using the search functionality. Once the search results are provided, the user can select a URL to view the document at which point the search server displays an intermediate page indicating the user to insert a particular CD-ROM on which the required document resides. Thus the user can search and explore the documents residing on several CD-ROMs.
